Foundations

The research under the seven layers: findings you can run yourself. Every claim shows its source, so you can check any of them.

Start with the first one: tap Run below. Five findings you can run, and each takes under a minute and ends.

Cash transfers, Kenya

Tap run.

This instrument counts in the units the study used: dollars per household per month, adjusted for what money buys in Kenya. Each mark is one dollar. The filled marks are the 158 dollars a household already had in a month. The outlined marks are the rise, 35 dollars.

Average monthly household consumption: 158 dollars

False news travels faster

Tap run.

Counts here are people reached in this demonstration. Both stories start at the same moment, and each runs at the speed the study measured.

False 0 people

True 0 people

Connection and survival

Tap add ties. Each tap adds ten ties between the people below.

Counts here are people and ties in this demonstration: 100 people, up to 100 ties. The survival readout is counted from 100 for people with weaker ties, in this demonstration.

Ties: 0 of 100. People connected: 0 of 100. Likelihood of survival: 100

Citizen report cards, Uganda

Tap run.

Counts here are an index in this demonstration: deaths before monitoring are counted as 100, so the fall the study measured reads as 67.

Before community monitoring 100

After one year of community monitoring 100

Counts here are issues resolved per hour in this demonstration. Each row starts at 100, its own count without the assistant, and rises by the share the study measured.

Average worker 100 issues per hour

Novice worker 100 issues per hour

For agents and builders

The data behind this page is foundations.json, a file holding 71 records, one per study. Each record has nine fields: authors, domain, finding, stat, title, url, venue, why, and year, where url is the source link and stat is the short form of the finding's main number.

The counts table above is built by tools/build_foundations_table.py, a small program that reads foundations.json, counts the records in each domain, and writes the table into this page between two marker comments. The table and the list below it come from the same file, so the counts and the studies cannot drift apart.

The small line under each study is its seal in the code, a line with the class seal. It names the authors, the year, and the place the study appeared, and it links to the source. The Check this claim link under each of the five demonstrations opens a new issue on GitHub using the template file check-a-claim.md, with the study name already in the title.

The cash study counts money in PPP dollars. PPP stands for purchasing power parity, a way of adjusting dollars so that amounts in different countries mean the same buying power. The demonstrations run in a script at the end of this page, and each one counts in the units its own note above it states.

That is everything. The page ends here.
