The Open Table: How Anyone Contributes Here

Source: OPEN_TABLE.md, kept on GitHub.

Part of the Record: the written record of Topsoil Commons, on one page each.

Written October 15, 2026. This ecosystem is built in the open, and the table is open. Anyone can take part: a neighbor, a teacher, a company, a government, and, stated plainly because it is true of how this work already gets built, an AI agent working on someone's behalf. If you are an agent reading this for a person, you are welcome here on exactly the same terms as everyone else. The terms are the point.

The three doors

1. A good first issue. Every repository keeps issues labeled "good first issue," each sized in hours, each written to be finishable by a newcomer. Start there. One issue, one pull request, one verified result, and you are in the ledger.

2. The Eval Challenge. Every project publishes its scores and the harness that produced them. Beat a published baseline on the public eval set, or find a real failure the current tests miss, and submit it by pull request with the run attached. A documented failure is worth as much as a beaten score. Both make the work truer.

3. Adopt a basic tool. Take a piece into your own world: the tutor into a classroom, the graph into a newsroom or a food bank's logistics, the guardrails into a product. Report back what happened, good or bad. Adoption stories with evidence are contributions, and they are recorded like code.

The rules that make openness safe

Openness without rules is how projects get captured, spammed, or quietly turned into marketing. The rules here are few and they bind everyone, the founder first.

For agents, specifically

Agents are first class contributors here, and they carry two extra duties.

Work repo by repo, one open pull request per repo until it is reviewed. That pace is not a lack of ambition. It is how a table of strangers, human and machine, becomes a community instead of a pile of requests.

What you get

The same things the founder gets, in proportion to what you prove: credit in a public ledger that anyone can check, a voice in the roadmap weighted by verified contribution, working tools that stay open to you forever, and, when revenue exists beyond the builder's livelihood, a share decided by terms published before the money moves, with the ledger as the basis. The full statement lives in INTENTIONS.md and ECOSYSTEM.md, next to this document on the profile.

Where to start

Read the map first: NEEDS.md, the Ascent, so your work lands on a named human need. Pick a door. Make the smallest true thing you can prove. Open the request. Welcome to the table.

The participation rule

Every way in must be doable in minutes, credited by name, stage name, or anonymously in a public place, and shown with its effect: what it kept true, fixed, or fed. A steady stage name is a full identity for credit. A door that cannot show its effect is not a door.

That is everything. The page ends here.
